The European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC), taking place in MECC Maastricht from 6 to 8 May 2026, shows how international congresses can take meaningful steps towards sustainability without compromising the delegate experience. With a strong focus on both environmental impact and wellbeing, ESOC puts concrete measures into practice.
A key priority is rethinking delegate travel. Together, the ESOC organisation and PCO Congrex actively encourage a shift from air to rail, promoting more sustainable long-distance travel across Europe. In close collaboration with Maastricht Convention Bureau, MECC Maastricht and transport partner Spauwen Travel, seamless connections between international gateways and Maastricht are facilitated, making lower-impact travel options increasingly accessible.
Key mobility measures include:
• active promotion on the ESOC conference website for rail travel over short-haul flights
• combined shuttle transfers from major airports to hotels
• free access to public transport within the Maastricht region and low-rate bike rental options during the conference, including guidance on routes and safety
Once in Maastricht, the city itself becomes part of the solution. Its compact, walkable and bike-friendly character allows delegates to move easily between venues, reducing reliance on high-impact transport while enhancing the overall experience.
Sustainability is closely linked to ESOC’s mission in stroke prevention and care and is reflected in both the scientific programme and the event design. Alongside knowledge exchange, delegates are encouraged to stay active through wellbeing initiatives such as morning runs, bootcamps and a padel tournament.
By combining smarter travel choices, strong local partnerships and a programme centred on health and movement, ESOC Maastricht offers a practical and forward-looking example of how congresses in Europe can reduce their impact while creating a more engaging delegate experience.
