Calgary, Alberta - For over 50 years, the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre (CTCC) has been a community gathering place, paving the way for the business events industry as Canada’s first purpose-built convention centre, leading to the opening of other centres across the country. In this time, we have never lost sight of our place within a larger Canada. Today we are proud to unveil our Indigenous ReconciliAction Plan, the first for a Canadian convention centre.
“For the CTCC, we started by reflecting on our land acknowledgement and learning the why and history of all of us as newcomers to acknowledge the lands we are on.” Kurby Court, President and CEO.
Our Indigenous Action Plan reflects on our role within a greater community and builds a P.A.T.H. forward through collaboration and our understanding that more can be done towards truth and reconciliation. The plan is a multi-year endeavour that will continually change and evolve as we learn and grow as an organization, encompassing the following four elements.
Partner and collaborate with Indigenous leaders and knowledge keepers in understanding the history, practices, and stories of the lands.
Acknowledge our role within the Calgary region in the bringing together of people from far and wide to the ancestorial lands of Treaty 7 and Metis Nation within Alberta District 5 and 6.
Teach employees and guests through cultural awareness training by eliminating misconceptions, while providing opportunities for engagement, reflection and participation within Indigenous communities.
Heighten our commitment towards meaningful relationships with Indigenous people through employment and business opportunities.
“Our collective responsibility includes acting on principle and doing what’s right – not because it’s easy, but because – through our actions – we believe we can help build a world of balance, belonging and equity. As an organization, we are committed to creating change that is not just impactful but meaningful, ensuring a positive legacy to the broader community.” Kurby Court
